Travel words · past experience · following a changed plan
Connect the sentence to its purpose
Ask what a speaker is trying to do: report an experience, request something, or explain a change. That purpose narrows the grammar and vocabulary choices before you worry about every unfamiliar word.
For a pattern such as た形 + ことがある, study both the form that attaches to it and the meaning of the complete expression. A familiar verb is not enough if its ending does not fit the sentence.
Keep reading after the first plausible answer
Messages often mention an original arrangement before giving an update. A place or time that appears first may be a distractor. Mark contrast words such as でも and follow the speaker to the final decision.
When checking kanji readings, small kana and long vowels matter. Read りょこう in short sound units. Avoid adding a long vowel simply because a similar-looking word has one.

Kanji: small kana and vowel length
「旅行」の読み方は?
- りょこう
- りょうこう
- りゅこう
- りょうこ
Show answer and explanation
Answer: りょこう
旅行 is りょこう, travel. The first syllable has a small ょ and is not lengthened.
旅行 names travel. Compare りょ with りょう: the extra う changes the sound. The correct reading begins with the short combined sound りょ and ends with こう.
Question n4-kanji-001 · Original beta practice
Vocabulary: choose the thing used for the action
電車に乗る前に、駅で__を買いました。
- 切符
- 免許
- 住所
- 約束
Show answer and explanation
Answer: 切符
切符 is a ticket. It is the item purchased before boarding a train.
The sentence says the purchase happens at a station before boarding a train. 切符, a ticket, fits both the place and the sequence. An address or a promise does not fit 買いました here.
Question n4-vocabulary-001 · Original beta practice
Grammar: describe an experience
日本へ__ことがあります。
- 行った
- 行くの
- 行って
- 行き
Show answer and explanation
Answer: 行った
た形 + ことがある expresses a past experience: having been to Japan.
The words ことがあります signal an experience construction. Put 行く into its plain past form, 行った, before こと. The completed sentence says the speaker has been to Japan.
Question n4-grammar-001 · Original beta practice
Reading: find the current meeting place
マキ:駅の改札で待ち合わせる約束でしたね。でも、人が多いので、駅の隣の本屋の前にいます。映画は二時からです。急がなくても大丈夫です。マキさんはどこで待っていますか。
- 本屋の前
- 駅の改札
- 映画館の中
- カフェの二階
Show answer and explanation
Answer: 本屋の前
The later message changes the meeting place to in front of the bookshop because the ticket gates are crowded.
The ticket gates were the agreed meeting place, but でも introduces a change. 本屋の前にいます states where Maki is now. The movie time explains why there is no need to hurry; it is not the location answer.
